Thanks for your comment, Martin. I use Issuu and agree with you that solutions like Issuu and scribd is one part of 'the future of publishing' among other technologies and solutions... Hopefully more writers and publishers will find out that the digital distribution is not that difficult or expensive at all, and start's expanding their digital range of book/magazine titels. And - probably most important - understand that they need to do this to keep their old readers/consumers and reach new ones.

What a great post, lots of relevant arguments and data points mentioned here. The music industry analogy has been made over and over again, but I agree with you the scenarios are almost identical, with the exceptions that the pace today is much faster. As soon as digital reading devices become cheaper and more versatile, I reckon that mainstream adoption of digital editions will go crazy. This has happened yet though, and it should leave ample time for the publishing industry to learn from the mistakes made in the field of music, and, as you say, act.

My sense is that many within the publishing industry still are looking to see which one of the new technologies will form a standard. Yet, I don't think we'll see just one standard, but probably a mix of five or so different platforms/technologies (just like iTunes is not the only way of getting digital music out there).

I recommend Issuu as a free and easy solution to get started with digital editions. Most of the most visionary publishing companies are already using it with great success. For the record, I should also say that I'm part of the team behind Issuu.
